    Descript.
The direction of the name is “the hard lightning”. Held with two hands, at the time to strike the enemy, it takes the dimension of a rainbow. It can then level the hills, passing above the armies.

    Story
At the time of the ultimate battle of the Táin Bó Cúailnge (“Raid of the cows of Cooley”), Fergus attacks the king of Ulster Conchobar Mac Nessa and a blow so powerful strikes to him that it makes “shout” his shield. Whereas it is on the point of massacring a great number of Ulates, it is girdled by Cormac Cond Longas which persuades it to divert its warlike fury towards the three hills which are in the marsh. Since, the topped hills bear the name of “Bald people of Mide”.

    Dáinsleif
    Owner King Högni
Source Story of the Eternal Battle of Hoy

    Descript.
Dáinsleif (“Legacy of Dáin” in Old norrois) is the sword of the king Högni according to the account which Snorri Sturluson makes battle known under the name of Hjadningavíg. The sword forged by the dwarves. It always strikes its target and no wound inflicted by its blade will ever heal, but if drawn it cannot be sheathed again until it claims a life.

    Story
The island of Hoy is said to be have once been the site of a magical battle. This bloody conflict was between the armies of two men and each night, after the bloodshed, the dead were reborn. The battle was between the kings Högni, and Hedinn Hjarrandason. Hedinn Hjarrandason had abducted King Högni's daughter, Hild, while the king was absent from his kingdom.

Source Frank History (Song of Roland)

    Descript.
Durandal is the name of the sword knight Roland. Durandal comes from Dragvendill: sword, Norwegian name, old sword of the family of Rafnista, is at the origin of the word Durendal: “blind Welsh force”, who gave his name to Durandal.

    Story
The death of this last with Roncevaux in an ambush set-up by Basque S is told in the Chanson of Roland (Song of Roland) (where the Basques are replaced by the Moor S). Feeling his end to approach, Roland tried to break Durandal on a rock, to prevent that it is not taken by the enemy. But the blade remained intact and made burst the rock, opening the Brèche of Roland. A version of the legend wants that Roland then called the archangel Saint Michel with the assistance, then launched the sword towards the valley. This one then crossed miraculeusement several hundred kilometers before being card-indexed in the rock of Notre-Dame of Rocamadour where one can still admire it today.

    to be cotinued ....

Roland itu katanya Paladin-nya Charlemagne (see here).

Caladbolg kebanyakan nemu yang versi FFX :swt:

Carolus Magnus and his knights. Roland kayanya sih yang di sebelah kanannya. Yang satu lagi Olivier.

    Yang katanya nancep di tebing.

(sepertinya) replika yang disimpen di museum.

    Dari berbagai sumber. CMIIW.

Kalo menurut gw lebih bagus pedang asli daripada versi anime/game, soalnya keliatan lebih 'efisien', not just for looks (as in the games). Kesannya 'one slash one kill' gitu :haha:

TS bahas juga dunk macemnya Claymore, Excalibur, Hrunting & Naegling, etc. itu juga kan pedang2 legendaris.

Kusanagi (Grasscutter) is a legendary Japanese sword, as important to Japan's history as Excalibur is of Britain's. It is a powerful sword like the Katana.

The history of this sword extends into legend when the Japanese god, Susano-O-No-Mikoto encountered a grieving family headed by Ashi-Na-Zuchi. Upon inquiry, the elder told that his family was ravaged by the fearsome 8-headed serpent of Koshi who consumed seven of the family's eight daughters and the creature was coming for his final daughter, Kushi-Nada-Hime. Susano proceeded forward to investigate tne creature, and after an abortive encounter he returned with a plan to defeat it. In return, he asked for Kushi-Nada-Hime's hand in marriage which was agreed. Transforming her temporarily into a comb to have her company during the battle, he detailed his plan.

He instructed the preparation of 8 vats of rice-beer to be put on individual platforms positioned behind a fence with 8 gates. The monster took the bait and put each of its heads through each of the gates. With the necessary distraction provided, Susano attacked and slew the beast. He decapitated each of the heads and then proceeded to the tails. In the fourth tails, he discovered a great sword inside the body with Susan-o which he called Murakakumo-No-Tsurugi (Sword-of-the-village-of-the-clustering-clouds) which he presented to the god, Amaterasu to settle an old grievance.

Generations later in the reign of the 12th emperor, Keiko, the sword was given to the great warrior, Yamato-Dake as part of a pair of gifts given by his aunt, Yamato-Hime, to protect his nephew in peril.

These gifts came in handy when Yamato-Dake was lured onto an open grassland during a hunting expedition by a treacherous Daimyo. The lord, had fiery arrows fired to ignite the grass to trap Yamato-Dake in the field and have him burn to death and killed the warrior's horse to prevent his escape. Desperately, Yamato-Dake used Murakakumo-No-Tsurugi to cut back the grass to remove fuel from the fire, but in doing so, he discovered that the sword enabled him to control the wind around to make it move in the direction he swung. Taking advantage of the magic, Yamato-Dake used his other gift, fire strikers, to enlarge the fire in the direction of the lord and his men and used the winds controlled by the sword to sweep the blaze toward them to kill them. In triumph, Yamato-Dake renamed Murakakumo-No-Tsurugi as Kusanagi (Grasscutter) to commemorate his narrow escape and victory.

Eventually, Yamato-Dake married and fell in battle with a monster after ignoring his wife's advice to take Kusanagi with him.

Eventually, the sword came into the possession of the emperor until the Battle of Dannoura, a naval battle that ended in the defeat of the forces of the child Emperor, Antoku at the hands of Minomoto Yoshitsune. Upon hearing of the defeat, the emperor's grandmother led the Emporer and his entourage to commit suicide in the waters of the strait along with three important artifacts which included Kusanagi. Although the enemy managed to stop a handful of them and recovered two of the three items of the Emperor, Kusanagi was never found.

The 10th Emporer, Sujin, ordered the fashioning of a replica of Kusanagi and was placed at the Temple of Atsuta.

    Gambar menyusul :haha:

It has been described as having a gold hilt with twin dragons whose eyes shoot out fire (other legend whose eyes have the power to calm). It was studded with three jewels Jacinth, Topaz, Diamond. The blade is engraved on one side with words "take me up" (other legend "one edge to defend") and the other side with "cast me away" (other legend "one edge to defeat").

    Story
Excalibur was the wondrous sword of Arthur. Also known as Caliburn, as the fabled sword that was a gift from Avalon (see more in Arthurian Legend).

    Story
At the time of the battle of Uhud Ali broke his saber on the helmet of an adversary. Mohammed carried to the belt two sabers. It gave its Zulfikar saber to his Ali (son-in-law). He (Mohammed) thought that he would not take it and that he could not handle it. However `Ali having taken the saber and throwing himself in the fight, the prophet saw it fighting with violence, striking with Dhû' l-fikar ahead, behind, on the right and on the left. A quraychite being presented in front of him, being covered with its shield, `Ali struck it so that the saber penetrated through the shield and the helmet, split the head of this man and crossed his body to the chest. The prophet, by seeing this exploit, known as: “lā fatā ʾillāʿalī, lā saīf ʾillā ḏū-l-fiqār" ("There is no saber like Dhû' l-fikar, and there is no hero like `Ali").

    Kusanagi no Tsurugi
    [IMG]
Owner Amaterasu then passed to Japan's Emperor
    Source Japanese History

    Descript.
One of the three Go-shin tai (Sacred Regalia) that symbolize the Imperial throne (the two other are Jewel's neklace "Yasakani no Magatama" and miror "Yata no Kagami"). It known as "Grasscutter" (because it was used by prince "Yamato Takeru" to cut grass to make an escape route). Original name is "Ama-no-Murakumo-no-tsurugi" (heavenly gathering of clouds sword). Other legend say it was forged from the hardest material in the earth.

    Story
Susano-o, the god of storms and the sea, who had been exiled to Izumo, discovered the sword after rescuing a damsel in distress from a dragon. Susano-o saw a maiden who was about to be sacrificed to appease an angry eight-headed dragon named Yamato-no-Orochi. Susano-o gathered eight vats of rice wine, one for each of the dragons heads. The gluttonous dragon drank until he passed out at which point Susano-o hacked the beast to pieces with his own sword called variously Ama-no-Haye-Kiri (Fly-Cutter,) Worochi-no-Kara-sabi or Worochi-no-Ara-masa. As he was cutting through the tail he heard a clank and upon closer inspection discovered a sword hidden inside. Recognizing this as a sacred weapon he gave it to his sister Amaterasu, the sun goddess, who would later send it to earth and pass it on to her great grandson Jimmu-Tenno the first emperor of Japan as a symbol of his divinity.

    History
After that it was kept in the Imperial pallace until 92 B.C. Then the 10th Emperor Suijin (97-30 B.C.) had the "Kusanui" Shrine built to house it and installed his daughter (Yamato-Hime) to care for the sword with the other Go-shin tai (as a priestess). In 5 B.C. "Kusanui" Shrine was moved to Ise.

Named change to "Grasscutter" when Prince Yamatotakero-no-Mikoto (the son of the 12th Emperor Keiko) used it to cut tall grass, story :
Prince Yamatotakero-no-Mikoto, the son of the 12th Emperor Keiko (71-130 A.D.) stopped at the shrine to pray on his way to fight the Ainu (Ebisu) people from (Tokaido) the north. The priestess Yamato-Hime, Prince Yamato's aunt had a premonition that if she lent him the sacred sword that he would be victorious. At one point in his battle Prince Yamato was surrounded in a field and the Ainu set fire to the grass hoping to burn the Prince out. Yamato drew the Billowing Clouds Sword and slashed through the tall grass creating a fire break. Just then a divine wind came and blew the fire back at the Ainu giving Prince Yamato the victory just as his aunt had foreseen. Prince Yamato returned the sacred sword to its shrine and from that day forward it was known as the Kusanagi or "Grass Cutting Sword".

In 668 A.D. a Korean monk named Dogio stole the Kusanagi, story:
In 668 A.D. a Korean monk named Dogio stole the Kusanagi and boarded a ship attempting to return home to Silla. As the ship set sail Susano-o, the god of storms, the sea, and self-appointed protector of the sword, whipped up a typhoon which forced the ship to turn back to Japan where the sword was recovered.
In 686 the Kusanagai was moved to the Shrine at Atsuta after a divination revealed that the Emperor Temmu's illness was the result of a curse associated with the sword.
Then it lost at sea with the other Go-shin tai, story:
In 1185 at the Battle of Dan-no-Ura, the Taira clan representing Imperial rule and Minamoto clan representing the Shogunate were fighting for supremacy. The young emperor Antoku and his grandmother were on a ship surrounded by those of the enemy. Rather than allow themselves to be taken alive the grandmother grabbed the boy emperor and the two pieces of imperial regalia and leapt into the ocean to drown them both. An arrow tore her robe and she dropped the Mirror on board, but she took the sword and Antoku with her to the bottom of the straits.

The story takes different directions at this point. The Taira clan says that the sword was lost and because of this no subsequent emperor has been properly enthroned.

However the Minamoto claim that the young emperor was only carrying the replica and the original was still safe in the Atsuta Daijingu Shrine in Owari.

Another version of the tale says that Susano sent water birds to dive for the missing sword and after recovering it they returned it to the shrine at Atsuta for safe keeping.

    Panjang boo...

    Info...
Two legendary Japan's swordsmith clan : Masamune and Muramasa
    Legend :
A legend tells of a test where Muramasa challenged his master, Masamune, to see who could make a finer sword. They both worked tirelessly and eventually, when both swords were finished, they decided to test the results. The contest was for each to suspend the blades in a small creek with the cutting edge facing the current. Muramasa's sword, the Juuchi Yosamu (10,000 Cold Nights)10,000 cut everything that passed its way; fish, leaves floating down the river, the very air which blew on it. Highly impressed with his pupil's work, Masamune lowered his sword, the Yawaraka-Te (Tender Hands), into the current and waited patiently. Not a leaf was cut, the fish swam right up to it, and the air hissed as it gently blew by the blade. After a while, Muramasa began to scoff at his master for his apparent lack of skill in the making of his sword. Smiling to himself, Masamune pulled up his sword, dried it, and sheathed it. All the while, Muramasa was heckling him for his sword's inability to cut anything. A monk, who had been watching the whole ordeal, walked over and bowed low to the two sword masters. He then began to explain what he had seen.

"The first of the swords was by all accounts a fine sword, however it is a blood thirsty, evil blade, as it does not discriminate as to who or what it will cut. It may just as well be cutting down butterflies as severing heads. The second was by far the finer of the two, as it does not needlessly cut that which is innocent and undeserving."

In another account of the story, both blades cut the leaves that went down on the river's current equally well, but the leaves would stick to the blade of Muramasa whereas they would slip on past Masamune's after being sliced. Or alternatively both leaves were cut, but those cut by Masamune's blade would reform as it traveled down the stream. Yet another version has leaves being sliced by Muramasa's blade while the leaves were repelled by Masamune's, and another again has leaves being sliced by Muramasa's blade and healed by Masamune's.

In yet another story Muramasa and Masamune were summoned to make swords for the Shogun or Emperor and the finished swords were held in a waterfall. The result is the same as the other stories, and Masamune's swords are deemed holy swords. In one version of the story Muramasa is killed for creating evil swords.

Masamune Style : The swords of Masamune have a reputation for superior beauty and quality.
Muramasa Style contrasted with those of Masamune.

    Comparison
    Legend :
Muramasa's blades are described as bloodthirsty or evil.
Masamune's blades are considered the mark of an internally peaceful and calm warrior.
Masamune's blade and Muramasa's blade being put into a river strewn with lotus leaves. The leaves swirled around the Masamune blade untouched, but the Muramasa blade cut them.

The heavily sculpted gold pommel is made in two halves, resembling a bulky Oakeshott type. Long gold grip was decorated with fleurs-de-lis inside the diamond patterning. The gold cross is an Oakeshott style and in the shape of two winged dragons with lapis azuli beads for eyes. The cross was stamped in the 13th century with the weight of the gold in the hilt, the text reading as follows: Deux marcs et demi et dix esterlins ("two marks and half and ten sterlings").
    The Blade :
The blade is a rather slender Oakeshott type XII. It has a relatively wide, shallow fuller. It is medieval.
    The Scabbard :
The scabbard throat and the belt. It has been changed. It is made of gilded silver, the throat decorated along its length with gems, while the rest is covered with purple velvet and decorated with fleurs-de-lis embroidered with gold thread. The velvet and fleurs-de-lis were added in 1824 for the coronation of Charles X. A piece of the belt is still in place, fitted with a gilded buckle in a decidedly medieval style.

    Story
Charlemagne—or Charles the Great—is one of the most important figures in European history. He was king of the Franks, a people living in what is known as France today. He was born in 742 AD, the son of the Frankish king Pepin the Short. He inherited the crown together with his brother Carloman in 768, but when Carloman passed away in 771, Charles became the sole ruler. One of the things he inherited was the obligation to protect the temporal rights of the Holy See. He was soon embroiled in wars with Lombard enemies of the Pope and with the pagan Saxons in Germany. His successes in defeating the Lombards and Saxons made the Pope declare Charles the first champion of the Catholic Church in 774. The next 20 years were full of warfare against Saxons, Lombard insurgents and the Moors of Spain. In the latter conflict, there was a Frankish campaign against the Moors in 778, where the legendary battle in the Pass of Roncevalles took place. In this battle, Charles' paladin Roland fell, breaking his sword "Durandal" and entered legend in the "Song of Roland". The following year, Charles attacked the Saxons again, ending in the baptism of the Saxon leader in 785. After that, Charles' life was relatively quiet, interrupted only by the odd revolt and Viking raid. His defense of the Pope and Western Christendom was recognized in 800 AD, when the Pope crowned him Emperor of the Western Empire. Apart from his military prowess, he was also a superb emperor, bringing order to a tumultuous time and setting an example for future kings. Agriculture, trade and law flourished. He died in 814, a few months before his 72nd birthday. The empire soon split into several kingdoms, but the work of Charles the Great had left an indelible legacy.

Hrunting was the magical sword given to Beowulf by Unferth. The sword possessed great power and never failed anyone who used it. Beowulf describe it himself with word
"And give Unferth my old heirloom,
    my splendid wavy sword
    widely known among men
    to have a hard edge.
I will do my glory work
    with Hrunting—or
    death will take me"

    Story
Although the sword possessed great power and was claimed to have never failed anyone who used it, however when Beowulf descended to the bottom of the lake where Grendel's Mother dwelt, the sword lost its power and the Hrunting was ineffective against the creature. As the "fabulous powers of that heirloom failed," Beowulf was forced to discard it.

The name may well mean "nailer", that is it drives like a nail in to its enemy. However it is also possible that it refers to jeweled nails on its hilt. Nevertheless the sword is described as being "gomol ond grægmæl" (old and gray)

    Story
After Beowulf, finding that the sword (Hrunting) given him by Unferth cannot harm his foe, discards it in fury. Beowulf is saved from the effects of his opponent's attack by his armor and, grasping a mighty sword (Nægling) from Grendel's mother's armory (which, the poem tells us, no other man could have hefted in battle), Beowulf beheads her. Travelling further into the lair, Beowulf discovers Grendel's corpse; he severs the head. Beowulf then returns to the surface and to his men at the "ninth hour" He returns to Heorot, where Hrothgar gives Beowulf many gifts, including the sword Nægling, his family's heirloom.

    To be continued.....

    Fáfnir's treasure....

    Story
It is initially the property of Fáfnir, which makes use of it to threaten his/her brother Regin and to preserve for him only the treasure from which they come to seize by assassinating their father Hreidmar. Sigurd takes possession of it after having killed Fáfnir with the other Fafnir's treasure (the Helm of Terror and a gold byrnie).

Gram (old norse) mean wrath. In the Nibelungenlied, Siegfried's sword is called Balmung; in Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle, it is called Nothung. It was forged by Weyland The Smith and originally belonged to Siegfried father, Sigmund, who received it in the hall of the Volsung after pulling it out of a log into which Odin had stuck it—nobody else could pull it out.

    Story
Sigurd the son of Sigmund grew up in a rapid pace both in physique and strength, he had reached manhood and is ready to take on any challenges in his life. His tutor and foster-father Regin was a dwarf and famous blacksmith. Regin had invested many years in training Sigurd in the hope that he'll assist him in obtaining his famous family treasure, the Rhinegold. This treasure was guarded by the dragon known as Fafnir, which in fact was the brother of Regin. Fafnir was a sorcerer who worshipped the Norse God , Loki. He had joined forces with the evil Lyngi, King of the Hundings to kill his own father Hreidmar and drove off his brother Regin to possessed the Rhinegold. On the other hand he agreed to obtained the magic spear known as Gungnir for Lyngi. This magic spear belonged to the God, Odin. Both Gods were angered by their trust in Fafnir, who had stolen Odin's priced sprear and at his cruelty in slaughtering his own father ; they transformed him into a great dragon and punished him to guard this treasure for eternity. The Gods also had him transported to a place known as Glittering Heath to live in seclusion and loneliness.
Sigurd on hearing the story readily agreed to help Regin and requested him to forge a mighty sword for battling Fafnir. But none of the swords forged were able to withstand the powerful blows when wielded by Sigurd; it broke into two when it hit the anvil. It was then that Hjordis, the mother of Sigurd appeared and revealed the feud between his father, Sigmund and Lyngi. Hjordis told Sigurd of how his father was murdered :

It all began with the sword Gram, it was said that this sword was forged by the God and was drove into the trunk of the thousand years old oak tree Branstock. The sword had the power to grant its owner victorious in all the battles and he who wields it is practically invincible. No one was able to extract it from Branstock except the mighty hero, Sigmund. Lyngi who had tried unsuccessful was both envious and jealous. Lyngi then had to compete with Sigmund again for the love of the beautiful maiden Hjordis; again he lost out to Sigmund and jealousy turned to hatred. He was determined to bring about the downfall and death of Sigmund. When they got married, war broke out between the Sigmund and the Hundings, because Lyngi refused to give up Hjordis.

With the magical sword Gram before him; Sigmund was practically indestructable in battle. Lyngi then was forced to seek help from the sorcerer Fafnir. Fafnir who had the patronage of the God, Loki tricked him into revealing the means of defeating Sigmund. This would also be one of the eventual punishment inflicted on Fafnir by the Gods. Lyngi obtained the invincible spear, Gungnir and as the two most powerful weapons clashed ; the impact resulted in a blinding light and Gram was shattered into two pieces. He was thus able to mortally wound and defeat Sigmund in the battlefield. He then captured Sigmund and had him crucified on the Branstock. He wanted Sigmund to give up his love for Hjordis, but he refused and Lyngi thrusted the remains of the sword Gram into the back of Sigmund, killing him.

That night Hjordis who was then pregnant with Sigmund's child, discovered her husband whom had held his last breath to the moment they met. He told her to go to the battlefield to retrieve the broken shard of Gram and give it to his child when he had reached adulthood; then tell him to come before the great oak tree alone. With that the broken sword Gram which was still at the back of Sigmund turned to dust and he and Branstock fused into one, amid thunderstorm and heavy downpour. Hjordis who was then being persued by Lyngi found the shard and fled to King Alf of Denmark; whom she eventually remarried. Hjordis gave birth to a son, she name him Sigurd and King Alf brought him up as if his own.

Sigurd on hearing the story about the death of his father decided to seek revenge from Lyngi first before helping Regin. He brought the shard from Gram and appeared before Branstock. Right before him was a strange sight, he saw what seems to be a human image protruding from the trunk of the tree and his spine seems to form the shape of a great sword. ( what the picture is trying to depict, though my attempt is rather unsatisfactory ) The sword was broken off from the tip and he immediately realised that that was the remains of Gram. He placed the shard over the broken sword and it matches perfectly. Suddenly the trunk of Branstock seems to have rippled into liquid as the mighty sword Gram resurfaced from the liquidated bark, Sigurd quickly grabs the handle and retrieve Gram. He paid his last respect to his father and sets out to seek revenge.

With Gram in his hand, he sought out Lyngi and fought a brave battle with him; killing him eventually. He then returned the magical spear, Gungnir to the Temple of Odin and moved on to Glittering Heath.
